Population Pyramids |
Denver's population was growing pretty rapidly, but it took a large drop around the 24-14 year old range groups. It is now steadily increasing again. This could be because women are deciding to have kids at an older age.
New York's population appears to be growing steadily to rapidly increasing. It does look like there is a small dip in the 10-14 year old range, but it's picking back up again.
Miami's population seems to have been stagnant for a while, started decreasing then began increasing again. This could be because a large population of 30-34 year old people are now recently having kids, so the amount of kids under five is high. Meanwhile the ages between them and their parents are low.
Los Angeles' population was rapidly increasing, rapidly decreasing and is now currently increasing pretty steadily. This may be that people in Los Angeles are always having about the same number of kids at the same age, but many people move to LA around the ages of 20-30 to pursue their careers. This would explain why the majority of people in LA are 20-30 years old.
Austin Texas' population is very rapidly increasing.
Climate.gov Data Observations
I noticed that the East Coast is the only area in the US that gets a consistent amount of rain. As opposed to other areas that will get a large amount of rain one year and not a lot the next.
I noticed that despite being near the equator, California's ocean temperatures stay relatively cool.

- The student parking lot was more diverse. The student parking lot was more diverse because it has more cars which gave it a better chance to be more diverse.
- The single most abundant species in both parking lot was gray cars. This is the most abundant specie because gray is a neutral color that goes with everything.
- The staff parking lot had the lowest Shannon Diversity Index (1.567892027) and the student parking lot had the higher Shannon Diversity (1.585609367).
- If this experiment was conducted in a mall parking lot, the Shannon Diversity Index would be high because the parking lot is much bigger which gives more chance to have higher diversity. Also, people tend to have all sorts of types of cars regarding color, year, make and model.
- If this experiment was conducted at a new car dealership, I predict that the Shannon Diversity Index would be low because they tend to have the same types of cars in similar colors. Therefore, there wouldn’t be much variance among the cars thus a lower Shannon Diversity Index.
Wooly Worms Lab
a. The degrees of freedom is 6
c. The calculated chi-square value is 79.
d. The results indicate that it was not chance alone that caused the unequal numbers of capture wooly worm phenotypes.
e. The more colorful worms were subject to positive selection and the green worms were more subjected to to negative selection pressure. The colorful worms are easier to see because their color stood out in the green grass, while the green worms blended in with the grass and were harder to see.
f. Over time the colorful worms will decrease in in number because their predators will eat them first and won't see the green worms as much. Because the colorful worms are going away more green worms will be available and will increase in number due to natural selection.
